Initial review of the new Dell Precision M4600/M6600 laptops

Dell introduce the M4600 and M6600 laptops to the Precision range
The Precision laptop product line has recently evolved to include the Dell Precision M4600 and the Dell Precision M6600.

As replacements for the M4500 and M6500, these products have a lot to live up to!

We found very few design issues with the M4500 and M6500, although could not really understand why Dell offered these products with low resolution screen options, instead of simply fitting both with 1080p (1920x1080) and WUXGA (1920 x1200) screens respectively.

These products are aimed at the power user, typically designing in 3D, CAD, complex 2D and working in end photography, so we have yet to see a customer specifically request one of these laptops with a lower resolution screen than the maximum. There are plenty of Windows configuration options for font /icon sizing to aid those with eyesight constraints!

Interesting then, that the M4600 and M6600 are offered with 720p/900p screen options as well as 1080p and noticeably, the WUXGA 1920x1200 resolution has disappeared altogether from the M6600...I cannot see this being a popular decision!

In fact, we expected the M6600 to offer the next generation of screen resolution for a 17" laptop, possibly WQXGA 2560x1600 - so are baffled by the downgrading of the resolution on the new, larger 17.3" screen.

It will also be interesting to see if the touch-screen options being offered gain popularity.

One of the obvious main features of the two new models is the second generation of "i" series processors, these offer a massive amount of processing power and should serve these two laptops well over the next 2-3 years.

The upgraded nVidia and AMD graphics cards will also ensure that the Precision stays at the head of its field.
The inclusion of 4 RAM slot in the M4600 will also be a welcome addition.

In terms of design, the M4500 has been replaced by the M4600 which is now a smaller version of the M6600, which itself looks almost identical to the M6500 chassis.

The M6500 was well build, felt slimmer that its large size would have you believe and is probably a good choice for the basis of the M4600 and M6600 chassis.
Access is easy to add/replace parts such as RAM/disks/keyboard etc.

So, in summary, we are eager to receive, test and sell these two new models.

In our next Blog we will fully review either the M4600 and then the M6600, whichever arrives first, offering an opinion on the layout, performance, advantages and disadvantages of these new models.
